The Mercury/ASA Striper Tournament Series sponsored by Fountain Power Boats kicked off the Spring Striper Season at South Jersey Marina in Cape May. Despite reports that fishing was slow in the Cape May area, the tournament enjoyed a 31% increase in boat participation over last year’s tournament. Two factors contributing to the increase in boat entries is a change from a two day to one day tournament format. And the addition of a 26 and under category.

The reports of slow fishing were correct, only 8 boats from the 46 boat field weighed in fish. All 8 boats receive a cash payout for their efforts. Leading the field with a 43.05 total was Captain Matt Unsworth with Team Mod Squad fishing a 28 Contender. Team Mod Squad also won the Junior category of the tournament with honors being shared by Junior team members Ann Unsworth, Sydney Unsworth and Connor Rowe. Mod Squads payout for the tournament was $5590. Captain Jim McIlhinny of Team Just Released fishing a 33 Contender earned 2nd with a 41.50 total winning a $2684 payout. Captain Karl Bauz of Team Pirasea fishing a 38 Fountain took 3rd winning $3306. Pirasea had the biggest fish of the tournament weighing in at 38.6 pounds. Captain David Nova of Team Marlin Maniac on a 38 Fountain placed 4th winning $1150. Captain John Lamour of Team Animosity fishing a 25 Parker won 5th place and $920. Team Gold Rush fishing a 28 South Port took 6th and $690. Team Finn-Addict Four fishing a 26 Seaswil placed 7th and won the 26 & under category winning $920. Team Big Dog fishing a 36 Contender placed 8th winning the $690.
Mary Inman of Team Big Dog also won the Ladies Division for the tournament. A complete Listing of Tournament results can be found on the American Striper Series website www.fishasa.com along with all the information on the next ASA tournament held at Bahrs Landing in Sandy Hook, NJ on May 17th.
